Civil Society: Strengthening the Civic Space Grant Program

Mott aims to improve transparency, accountability, and social and environmental standards at the international finance institutions that fund major energy and infrastructure projects. This involves working with the financial and environmental sectors globally to ensure projects protect the environment, deliver sustained benefits to communities, and respect the needs of nearby residents. The focus includes influencing the investment patterns of emerging economies, particularly those of Brazil and China.

Type of Support

Overview

The grant focuses on promoting a free and open civic space where people can participate in initiatives to improve their communities and societies. It is underpinned by two main objectives: Advocacy and Outreach, supporting effective advocacy to strengthen the policy environment for civil society and making grants to infrastructure organizations involved in policy development and advocacy; and Research and Innovation, supporting research and innovative practices to advance civil society development with grants to organizations engaged in research, data collection, policy analysis, and addressing the closing space challenge for civil society. These efforts aim to protect and expand civic engagement environments, recognizing that such spaces can face threats from restrictive laws or unintended consequences of policies.
