Since 2007, Freedom House has been dedicated to providing short-term support to human rights defenders, civil society organizations, and survivors of severe religious persecution in some of the world’s most repressive and conflict-ridden environments. Their mission is to ensure that frontline activists and civil society organizations continue their critical work in hostile and unpredictable environments through emergency assistance, urgent advocacy and resiliency grants, and preventive security training.
The grant program by Freedom House, including the Emergency Assistance to Frontline Activists and the Dignity for All: LGBTQI+ Assistance Program, focuses on providing short-term support to at-risk individuals and organizations. These programs aim to help human rights defenders, civil society organizations, and survivors of religious persecution overcome immediate threats and continue their vital work. Assistance provided includes legal defense, medical treatment, emergency financial support for urgent needs like security equipment replacement, and preventive security training. These efforts target a broad range of beneficiaries, from political prisoners and land rights activists to LGBTI human rights groups and religious freedom defenders, across more than 110 countries.
