Effective Democracy Grant

The Gaia Fund is dedicated to supporting initiatives that sustain and enhance the democratic principles essential for a fair and representative political process in America. These principles include fair elections, representation for all, and equal political participation opportunities. The fund is particularly committed to addressing the challenges posed by the disproportionate influence of corporate and individual wealth in politics, advocating for a political landscape where every vote and voice has equal weight.

Type of Support

Overview

The Gaia Fund’s Effective Democracy grant program focuses on strengthening democracy by supporting programs that aim to preserve "one person, one vote" systems and ensure political participation is accessible to all. The grant champions initiatives that:

  • Promote small donor and public financing of political campaigns.
  • Encourage full disclosure of political campaign financing sources and reasonable limits on contributions and expenditures.
  • Support the renewal of Constitutional values that favor political equality and protect the rights of human beings over corporations.

The grant primarily has a national focus but may consider initiatives in California on a case-by-case basis. Projects outside California are rarely funded. Grants typically range from $5,000 to $50,000, aimed at projects with specific, finite funding needs or serving as seed funding for new efforts. Funding can be disbursed in a single payment or over two to five years, depending on the project's nature and requirements.
