Miller Foundation: Education Grant

The Miller Foundation aims to create a more holistic and equitable K-12 education system in Oregon. They focus on providing a supportive learning environment and high-quality education to all students, especially those furthest from opportunity, by funding organizations that support educational equity, teacher effectiveness, student success, school culture, and leadership improvement.

Type of Support

Overview

The Miller Foundation education-focused grants are designed to support organizations and schools that endeavor to improve the K-12 education landscape in Oregon. Specifically, these grants aim to:

  • Enhance the holistic aspects of the education system to ensure it is equitable and provides high-quality education opportunities to every student, with a focus on those furthest from opportunity.
  • Support community-based organizations that aid K-12 teachers, youth, and families in core subject success, school culture, and leadership.
  • Occasionally provide funding to K-12 schools, including public, charter, and tuition-free private schools that serve historically underserved communities and have demonstrated positive student outcomes.
  • Back K-12 arts education activities through specific arts grant programs.
  • Invest in organizations focused on education policy, advocacy, and systems change to improve equity within Oregon’s education system.
  • Support early childhood practice, policy, and advocacy, but only through invitation or in collaboration with other funders.

The foundation offers operating support through standard grant processes, with the possibility of single or multi-year grants, prioritizing flexible partnerships. Eligible organizations must have a minimum annual operating expense of $25,000, excluding in-kind expenses, with grant amounts typically representing 3-5% of an organization’s annual operating expenses. Organizations with a 5-year history of grant funding from Miller may apply for up to 3 years of support, while those with 2-4 years of funding history are eligible for up to 2 years of support. Newer applicants, especially first-timers, are encouraged to request a one-year grant initially.
