Our mission is to provide equitable public access to federal government records in our custody and control.
The grant program invites proposals for projects focused on publishing online editions of historical records, encompassing a broad array of materials such as documents, photographs, and audio records. Projects that offer insight into significant aspects of U.S. history, including the histories of diverse American communities and the nation's foundational debates, are encouraged. With an eye towards the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the program seeks projects that make historical records accessible while providing editorial context. Successful applications will demonstrate adherence to best practices in documentary editing, as outlined by the Association for Documentary Editing or the Modern Language Association's Committee on Scholarly Editions. The program emphasizes the importance of projects that do not solely focus on critical editions of published works, unless these form a minor part of a broader initiative.
