The U.S. National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that supports science and engineering in all 50 states and U.S. territories. NSF was established in 1950 by Congress to promote the progress of science, advance the national health, prosperity and welfare, and secure the national defense.
The Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) in Engineering and Computer Science program aims to provide authentic summer research experiences for K-14 educators. Its broad goals include fostering long-term collaborations between universities, community colleges, school districts, and industry partners. Specifically, the program supports a reciprocal exchange of expertise between K-14 educators and research faculty and, when relevant, industry mentors. Educators are expected to enhance their scientific disciplinary knowledge in engineering or computer science and translate their research experiences into classroom activities and curricula. This initiative aims to broaden students’ awareness of and participation in computing and engineering pathways while also enhancing hosting research faculty’s understanding of classroom practices, curricula, pedagogy, and the K-14 educational environment.
