As New York’s community foundation, we foster and engage in enduring and innovative philanthropy.
The grant program aims to support thriving communities by funding organizations that protect and create affordable housing, promote equity in the arts, improve civic engagement, and protect the environment. It targets agencies working at the neighborhood level as well as government and nonprofit institutions that are developing overarching strategies. Moreover, the grant puts a strong emphasis on improving the functionality of nonprofits and government entities. A significant focus area of this grant is historic preservation, particularly aimed at supporting low-income and minority communities and the boroughs outside of Manhattan. It seeks to restore historic places that hold significant, yet overlooked, aspects of City history. The grant supports programs that foster collaborations between preservation organizations and community groups, integrate preservation into neighborhood revitalization, promote the adaptive use of historic buildings for social purposes, and help develop alternative sources of financial support for maintaining and repairing these buildings.
