Overview

The BSF Regular Research Grants program is designed to fund collaborative research projects between U.S. and Israeli scientists in the field of basic science. Annually, around 400 applications are received, with approximately 100 approvals, maintaining about 450 active grants at any time. The program's annual expenditure is about $16 million. A distinctive feature of this grant is its emphasis not only on scientific excellence but also on the collaboration aspect, particularly the synergy and joint publications resulting from the projects. Applications are made jointly by researchers from both countries, with submissions welcomed once annually in mid-November. Although no prior collaboration is required, the potential for productive synergy is a critical evaluation criterion. The program supports a wide range of scientific disciplines, with submissions in any specific field accepted only biennially. Results are announced after the BSF Board's summer meeting. Over the years, the BSF has awarded more than $700 million to over 5,400 joint research programs, highlighting its commitment to fostering significant scientific advancements through international cooperation.
