Overview

The Community Wildfire Defense Grant aims to support communities situated in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) by focusing on the implementation of the National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy's three core goals. These goals include: 1) Restoring and maintaining resilient landscapes across jurisdictions to withstand fire-related disturbances, in accordance with management objectives; 2) Creating fire-adapted communities prepared to withstand wildfires without loss of life or property; and 3) Improving wildfire response through collaborative risk-based management decisions across all jurisdictions. The grant outlines no minimum funding limit and establishes a maximum of $250,000 for creating or updating Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP) and up to $10 million for executing projects detailed in a CWPP less than 10 years old. Approximately $160 million is anticipated to be available annually for the next five years through this competitive process, funded via the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Projects must be completed within a five-year timeframe. Furthermore, the grant requires a matching fund, which varies: 10% for developing or updating a CWPP and 25% for implementing CWPP projects, with waivers available for communities classified as underserved. No other waiver requests are permitted.
