The Wildlife Conservation Board protects, restores and enhances California’s spectacular natural resources for wildlife and for the public’s use and enjoyment in partnership with conservation groups, government agencies and the people of California.
The Habitat Enhancement and Restoration Program (HERP), initiated by the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB), focuses on restoring diverse habitat types across California. Since its inception in 1947 under the Wildlife Conservation Law, the program has aimed to support a plethora of restoration projects that enhance wildlife values and provide opportunities for wildlife-oriented public access. HERP facilitates projects in various environments including coasts, forests, deserts, wetlands, and grasslands, and also focuses on the development of wildlife corridors and fisheries enhancements such as fish ladders and barrier removal. The program's funding chiefly comes from the Habitat Conservation Fund and voter-approved bonds, ensuring continued support for these essential conservation efforts across the state.
