Overview

The Community Investment Tax Credit program aims to enhance the capability of 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations through state tax credit incentives, encouraging donations from individuals and businesses. These tax credits are designed to support local projects and services, furthering community revitalization efforts in Maryland. The program operates on an annual, competitive application basis, allowing qualified nonprofits to apply for tax credit allocations from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Donors contributing $500 or more to approved projects can receive tax credits worth 50% of their donation, in addition to federal and state tax deductions. The initiative has successfully leveraged significant charitable contributions, supporting a wide range of projects statewide.

  • Must register with the Office of the Secretary of State as a charitable organization if soliciting charitable contributions in Maryland
  • Must maintain charitable registration status with the Maryland Office of the Secretary of State
  • Must provide an official Certificate of Status from the Maryland Department of Assessment and Taxation
  • Required to submit a Semi-Annual Report detailing project activity, use of tax credits, and marketing efforts
  • May request an additional allocation of tax credits no more than twice during the award agreement period
