The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives.
This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) aims to support students at institutions that lack NIH-funded institutional predoctoral dual-degree training programs. The Kirschstein-NRSA, dual-doctoral degree, predoctoral fellowship (F30) focuses on enhancing the integrated research and clinical training of promising predoctoral students enrolled in a combined MD/PhD or similar dual-doctoral degree programs (e.g., DO/PhD, DDS/PhD, AuD/PhD, DVM/PhD), preparing them for careers as physician/clinician-scientists. Candidates are required to propose an integrated research and clinical training plan along with a dissertation research project in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of participating NIH Institutes and Centers. The fellowship is designed to significantly boost the recipients' potential to become productive, independent physician/clinician-scientists. This grant is targeted specifically at candidates proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial but permits involvement in a clinical trial led by a sponsor or co-sponsor. Eligibility is restricted to institutions that do not have NIH-funded predoctoral dual-degree training programs, including but not limited to Medical Scientist Training Programs (MSTP) or Dental Scientist Training Programs (DSTP).
