Type of Support

Overview

The Healthy Forests Reserve Program (HFRP) aims to assist landowners in the restoration, enhancement, and protection of forestland resources on private and tribal lands through financial assistance and easements. The program specifically supports efforts to promote the recovery of endangered or threatened species, improve plant and animal biodiversity, and enhance carbon sequestration. HFRP offers landowners 10-year restoration agreements and 30-year or permanent easements to undertake specific conservation actions. An additional enrollment option for American Indian tribe-owned acreage is a 30-year contract. Participation in the HFRP may provide some landowners with the benefit of avoiding regulatory restrictions under the Endangered Species Act by engaging in habitat restoration or improvement for specified periods.
