Overview

The overarching goal of the grant program provided by the William P. Wharton Trust is to fund projects that significantly align with William P. Wharton's vision of nature conservation and offer lasting, tangible results. The program specifically supports:

  • Conservation of renewable resources such as water, soil, wild animal life, forest resources, etc., with a focus on land acquisitions for conservation purposes primarily in Massachusetts and New England.
  • Management techniques that improve environmental quality and enhance species diversity.
  • Applied-level research and management in bird and forestry, as opposed to theoretical or molecular studies.
  • Projects that create materials or initiatives aimed at fostering an appreciation for, and concern towards, wildlife and natural systems. The Trust prioritizes projects that encourage public use and enjoyment of conserved lands while ensuring that natural resource protection is paramount over public recreation. Additionally, the program values projects that have the potential to attract matching funds and promote cooperation among conservation-focused organizations.
