The Division is responsible for promotion of good forest management and protection throughout the state on all lands.
The Forest Legacy Program (FLP) serves as a voluntary initiative aimed at preserving privately owned forest lands that hold significant ecological value and are at risk of being converted into non-forest uses. By working in collaboration with state agencies and landowners, the FLP focuses on safeguarding these areas within designated Forest Legacy Areas, primarily through the establishment of perpetual conservation easements. The program fundamentally seeks to prevent the loss of critical forestland, promoting the continuation of traditional forest-related activities such as timber management, and recreational pursuits like hunting, fishing, and hiking. It supports the protection of lands for their scenic, cultural, recreational, and ecological importance, using both acquisitions and donations to achieve its goals.
