The British Herpetological Society, established in 1947, aims to advance and promote the study of herpetology. Through its Herpetological Journal and various activities, it supports conservation efforts for native British species, worldwide field studies, scientific research, responsible captive breeding, and the dissemination of knowledge within the herpetology community.
The BHS Conservation Fund, formerly known as the Land Fund, focuses on preserving habitats vital for amphibians and reptiles by providing funds to purchase sites with significant or rare assemblages of these species, ensuring a management plan is in place. Additionally, it offers grants up to £1500 for practical conservation activities, such as creating new ponds or buying tools for habitat management, with a preference for projects that are matched funded. Each application is evaluated based on its merits, with a particular interest in proposals that align with local species action plans and biodiversity strategies.
