The Greater Harrisburg Community Foundation (GHCF) aims to improve area communities by supporting "upstream" solutions that address the root causes of societal issues. Through various grants and funding opportunities, GHCF seeks to empower nonprofit organizations to create lasting, positive social change by tackling problems at their source, rather than merely managing symptoms. By focusing on systemic solutions, GHCF supports a diversity of projects that enhance the quality of education, health, environment, and other critical community needs.
The GHCF UPstream grant is designed to support creative and strategic solutions that address the root causes of systemic issues within the communities served. Applicants may seek support for any "upstream" project, program, or intervention that best meets the needs of the target population. Examples of upstream projects include, but are not limited to, access to quality education, access to a safe and healthy environment, life skills training, materials that increase accessibility or improve an individual's self-sufficiency, and availability of reliable and safe transportation that enhances an individual or group's ability to grow, learn, or address a key need. Additional examples are animal spay/neuter clinics, early health screenings, job training and placement, and support of basic needs that help individuals or groups grow, learn, or address a key need.
