The U.S. National Science Foundation is an independent federal agency that supports science and engineering in all 50 states and U.S. territories. NSF was established in 1950 by Congress to promote the progress of science, advance the national health, prosperity and welfare, and secure the national defense.
The goals of the paleoclimate program are to provide a baseline for present climate variability and future climate trends and to enhance understanding of the processes affecting climate over the long term. This includes observational and modeling studies on past climate changes, their causes, and the development of new methods for understanding past climates. The program, especially through the P4CLIMATE competition, focuses on supporting research in two key areas: Past Regional and Seasonal Climate, and Past Climate Forcing, Sensitivity, and Feedbacks. It encourages applications from researchers at any career stage and from various institution types, including Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs), non-R1 institutions, and those in EPSCoR jurisdictions, as well as from underrepresented groups in Paleoclimate Science.
