The Royal Meteorological Society (RMetS) is the UK’s leading society for weather and climate. Its mission focuses on strengthening science, raising awareness about weather and climate importance, supporting meteorological professionals, and inspiring enthusiasts. It serves as a key custodian of meteorology science and profession in the UK and plays a significant international role through its diverse programs for members, the public, policymakers, and the wider meteorological community.
The Legacies Fund provides small monetary grants to Royal Meteorological Society members, particularly targeting younger scientists. These grants support expeditions, research projects, attendance at meteorological conferences, and educational courses where other funds are unavailable. The grants can cover a wide range of purposes, including the measurement of rainfall in the British Isles, attending scientific conferences, educational courses, research projects including field work, equipment purchase for field courses or research, maintaining the Society's library and archives, funding meteorological study equipment in schools, and supporting the Society's awards. Additionally, the fund helps to cover expenses for scientists, especially from overseas, to speak at Society meetings when their employers do not adequately cover these costs. Membership in the Society for at least one year is a requirement to apply for this award.
