The Washington State Department of Ecology's mission is to protect, preserve, and enhance Washington’s environment for current and future generations.
The Floodplains by Design grant program is the primary mechanism for supporting projects that enable communities to better coexist with floodplains. It is part of a larger public-private partnership focused on restoring natural floodplain functions and reducing flood risks in Washington’s river corridors. The program targets the conservation and restoration of habitats, particularly for salmon, enhances agricultural viability, improves water quality, and increases outdoor recreational opportunities. Through competitive grants, it supports local and Tribal governments and nonprofit organizations in undertaking multi-benefit projects. These projects aim to improve flood protection, conserve habitats, preserve farmland, and bolster outdoor recreation by bringing together diverse stakeholders in the floodplain management process.
