The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives.
The goal of this grant is to support the development of collaborative training programs between U.S. institutions and institutions in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) aimed at strengthening the LMIC institutions' capacity to conduct research on infectious diseases. This includes major endemic or life-threatening emerging infectious diseases, neglected tropical diseases, and infections common in HIV infected individuals or associated with non-communicable diseases of public health importance in LMICs. The grant focuses on training in prevention, treatment, and public health approaches across a range of areas including basic science, epidemiology, clinical, behavioral, and social science health research. It aims to prepare individuals for careers that significantly impact the health research needs of LMICs and may support trainees as lead investigators in clinical trials or in gaining research experience in trials led by others.
