The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives.
The Leading Equity and Diversity in the Medical Scientist Training Program (LEAD MSTP) aims to generate a diverse pool of highly trained clinician-scientist leaders to meet the nation's biomedical research needs. This grant supports dual-degree clinician scientist training at historically underrepresented institutions in NIGMS-funded MSTPs. The program focuses on developing and implementing strategies to integrate training and mentoring for completing clinical and research doctorate degrees efficiently. It seeks to equip graduates with skills for developing research programs that address human disease and lead advancements in biomedical research. The grant emphasizes the importance of optimizing training efficiency, fostering alumni persistence in research careers, and enhancing the diversity of the clinician-scientist workforce. Eligibility is limited to programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and institutions in states and territories participating in the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) program.
