Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Program

From California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE)

CAL FIRE's mission is to protect the people and property of California from the effects of devastating wildfires, promote ecosystem resilience, and enhance forest health through sustainable management practices that address threats like climate change, forest overcrowding, and pest infestations. This mission extends to safeguarding watersheds, promoting carbon storage, and supporting land management strategies that mitigate the impact of extreme disturbance events on forests.

Type of Support

Overview

The Volunteer Fire Capacity (VFC) Program is designed to support local and rural fire departments through federally funded grants, focusing on providing equipment for firefighting, communications, training, and safety for volunteer firefighters. However, it does not cover major equipment or capital repairs. There's a 50/50 match requirement indicating that departments must match the grant amount. With grants ranging from $500 to $20,000, depending on the availability of funds, a significant portion is dedicated to ensuring compliance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1977 standards for wildland firefighting personal protective equipment (PPE). Priority for this year's awards is given to departments needing funds to comply with these PPE standards or to enhance their training and equipment capabilities, keeping in alignment with the overarching goal of upgrading local fire protection and response.

Review Criteria

Preference will be shown for projects that encompass multiple communities, specifically those initiatives that include at least one small community with a population under 10,000 individuals. This encompasses efforts such as county-wide planning initiatives, regional collaboration groups, and collaborative efforts by numerous communities to devise protection strategies for expansive rural regions.
