Overview

The Rines Thompson Fund is designed to enrich the Greater Portland area by offering financial support to community-based organizations. This grant program has a specific focus on initiatives that enhance the region's vibrancy and well-being, covering a range of issue areas including environment and conservation, early childhood and youth programming, and arts and culture. It provides two types of grants: Project Grants for new or expanding projects within these focus areas, and General Support Grants for ongoing programs and operational needs that align with the fund's priorities. Eligible organizations must operate within specified local areas, including Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, Yarmouth, and Westbrook, to ensure the fund's impact remains closely tied to the community it serves.

Groups without any tax status with a fiscal sponsor that is an eligible organization

  • Must meet the Maine Community Foundation’s grant eligibility requirements
  • Be located in Cape Elizabeth, Cumberland, Falmouth, Gorham, Portland, Scarborough, South Portland, Yarmouth, and/or Westbrook
  • Address issues in environment and conservation, early childhood and youth programming, or arts and culture

Ineligibility

Organizations with expenses already incurred
Organizations regranting to a secondary grantee through a competitive process
Political campaigns
Lobbying for a specific vote
Activities promoting religious beliefs or restricted to religious group membership
Capital campaigns or endowments
Scholarships and camperships
Educational institutions (K-12 and higher education) and municipalities
Organizations that received a grant in the previous year (discouraged)
Municipalities, government agencies, faith-based organizations, or fiscally sponsored applicants for General Support Grants.
