The mission of the funder is to advance the field of biophysics by supporting research and development in various scientific disciplines such as math, chemistry, physics, engineering, pharmacology, and materials sciences. This support aims to encourage the use of interdisciplinary skills to explore and develop new tools for understanding the mechanisms of life and the complex systems within our bodies.
The Biophysical Society's awards program seeks to acknowledge and honor its members' contributions in the field of biophysics. The program offers sixteen different awards categories, including the Outstanding Doctoral Research in Biophysics Award. This specific award is designed to recognize exceptional thesis research, writing, and service contributions by two PhD recipients in biophysics—one from an academic institution in the United States and another from a non-US institution. Each awardee is granted an honorarium of $1,000. Nominations are invited from Society members, with provisions for submitting applications online. The program now accepts self-nominations, though the Fellows distinction and the Outstanding Doctoral Research in Biophysics Award are exceptions. Additionally, note the requirement for Society membership for nominators, nominees, and at least one support letter author.
