As it marks its first 50 years, Humanities Kansas is dedicated to carrying forward Kansas stories, continuing to highlight the state's rich cultural tapestry.

The Humanities For All Major Grant program aims to support projects that leverage history, literature, and culture to spark public engagement and conversations. Its broad goals include sharing stories that explore the human experience, engaging people in public discussions, and generating insights that help cultivate a thriving democracy. The grant supports a variety of humanities-focused projects, especially encouraging innovative and creative formats like exhibitions, discussions, films, and podcasts. The humanities, as defined for these grants, encompass a wide range of disciplines from history and literature to ethnic studies and the social sciences. Projects must aim to engage the general public, primarily targeting an adult audience outside of the formal education system.

  • A Unique Entity ID (SAM) from SAM.gov is required for sub-awardees
  • Grant funds can be used for: salaries for temporary or part-time staff, honoraria for scholars, in-state travel, non-durable supplies and some equipment (less than 25% of the grant), online programming tools, facility or equipment rental, and some publicity and promotions (cannot exceed 25% of the request)
  • Additional funds can be requested for accessibility services to increase access to the project
  • 501(c)(3) status is not required

Organizations with an open grant from a previous grant cycle
Organizations intending to use grants for salaries for full-time staff, publishing books or catalogs, performance pieces, purchasing major equipment/website hosting/insurance, purchasing/restoring/constructing buildings, courses for academic credit/school projects, academic conferences/programs for a single profession, creation/purchase of murals/memorials/monuments/plaques, individual research/scholarships/fellowships, fundraisers/advocacy/lobbying, projects discriminating based on race/color/national origin/gender/age/physical abilities/sexual orientation or identity, food/beverages/entertainment/promotional giveaways.
