The Wege Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the well-being of the Western Michigan community, specifically Grand Rapids, in honor of its founder's, Peter Martin Wege, legacy. With roots in the local success story of Metal Office Furniture (now Steelcase), the Foundation aims to support the region's growth and development in alignment with Peter Martin Wege's vision.
The Wege Foundation's Grants Policy centers around four main pillars: Arts & Culture (20%), Environment (35%), Education (25%), and Community Health & Wellbeing (20%), with specific target allocations for grantmaking in each area. These pillars are underpinned by cross-cutting themes that require adherence to standards such as LEED certification for capital grants and a focus on aiding under-resourced and marginalized communities. The Foundation seeks to establish clear, results-oriented goals for each pillar to streamline its grantmaking process, offer better direction to applicants, and improve outcomes evaluation. While targets exist to guide the Grants Committee and staff, the Foundation maintains flexibility to fund strategically opportunistic initiatives that align with the overarching goal of making Grand Rapids "the best medium-sized city in the United States" and exporting successful local programs to other communities.
