The mission of the Hearst Foundations is to identify and fund outstanding nonprofits to ensure that people of all backgrounds in the United States can build healthy, productive, and satisfying lives. The Foundations support well-established nonprofit organizations that address significant issues within culture, education, health, and social service, primarily serving large demographic and/or geographic constituencies. They prioritize organizations achieving truly differentiated results, with an emphasis on sustainability beyond their support.
The Hearst Foundations' Culture Grant supports cultural institutions that offer impactful programs in the arts and sciences, with a special emphasis on engaging young people and creating measurable impacts. Funding is prioritized for organizations that nurture and develop artistic talent across a variety of disciplines including arts schools, ballets, museums, operas, performing arts centers, symphonies, and theaters. About 25% of the Foundations' total funding goes to Cultural initiatives, with a significant portion directed at organizations with budgets over $10 million. The Foundations offer program, capital, and limited general and endowment support, with a minimum grant size of $100,000. Despite receiving numerous grant requests, only about 25% are funded, with 80% of the funding going to prior grantees and 20% aimed at new grantees.
