The Wildlife Conservation Board protects, restores and enhances California’s spectacular natural resources for wildlife and for the public’s use and enjoyment in partnership with conservation groups, government agencies and the people of California.
The grant program managed by the Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) supports projects that aim to enhance public access to natural areas. This initiative focuses on the protection, development, and promotion of public access areas, originally emphasizing hunting and fishing opportunities. Over time, it has expanded to include a variety of wildlife-oriented recreational activities such as bird watching, kayaking, and hiking. The program funds infrastructure such as fishing piers, boat ramps, ADA trails, and interpretive signage to facilitate these activities. It prioritizes projects that enhance recreational boating, provide hunting and fishing access, and promote non-consumptive wildlife-related recreation.
