Metro works with communities, businesses and residents in the Portland metropolitan area to chart a wise course for the future while protecting the things we love about this place. Metro serves more than 1.7 million people in Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties.
The Metro community enhancement grants target neighborhoods in the Portland metropolitan area affected by garbage transfer facilities, offering financial support since 1986. With over $6 million invested across communities like Forest Grove, Gresham, Portland, Oregon City, Sherwood, Troutdale, and Wilsonville, these grants, funded by fees from local waste transfer stations, aim to enrich surrounding areas. Focused on providing services to underserved populations, increasing recycling and reuse opportunities, improving environmental quality, and enhancing recreational and natural areas, these grants support projects ranging from environmental education and job training for youth to habitat restoration and community event production. Specifically, in Wilsonville, the community enhancement committee awards about $70,000 annually to projects that enhance environmental quality, recycling opportunities, recreational programs, and community appearance, prioritizing the well-being of youth, seniors, low-income individuals, and underserved populations.
