The National Institutes of Health (NIH), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the nation’s medical research agency — making important discoveries that improve health and save lives.
The grant program aims to fund cooperative agreement applications for investigator-initiated, multi-site, clinical trials (Phase III and beyond), focusing on the effects of natural products in areas of high research priority designated by the funder. Specifically, it targets natural products that include promising nutritional regimens standardizing specific naturally occurring nutritional compounds with compelling preliminary evidence, such as omega-3 fatty acids, anthocyanidins, or polyphenols. Applicants are encouraged to detail plans for a Clinical Coordinating Center to develop and implement these multi-site clinical trials. This includes outlines for project management, participant recruitment and retention, performance milestones, scientific conduct, and results dissemination. Applications should adhere to a two-phase, milestone-driven cooperative agreement funding mechanism and must be accompanied by a Data Coordinating Center (DCC) application proposing a data analysis and management plan for the clinical project, with both applications submitted simultaneously for consideration.
