Local Grantmaking Program

The mission of the Packard Foundation is to provide the nation's most promising early-career scientists and engineers with the freedom and funding to explore new frontiers in their fields. This effort reflects David Packard's recognition of the importance of robust university-based science and engineering programs, rooted in his understanding of the crucial role these disciplines played in the success of the Hewlett-Packard Company.

Type of Support

Overview

The California Communities Initiative emphasizes comprehensive support for families by enhancing stable and affordable housing, increasing access to green spaces and improving resilience to climate changes, and reinforcing community networks that offer reliable and affordable services. It prioritizes holistic approaches to connect healthcare, childcare, and financial supports, improving maternal and child health and wellbeing. The initiative funds organizations that enable connection through art, nature, and community engagements, and those that provide essential resources for economic resilience, such as food banks and housing. Additionally, it supports equitable access to culturally relevant afterschool programs for youth. Grant applicants can seek general support if their mission aligns with the initiative's goals or project-specific support for distinct programs or projects fitting within the initiative’s scope. There is no preference between general or project support, aiming to scale community-led solutions and amplify the voices of those directly affected by these challenges.
