From California Community Foundation

The Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative (NSI) is dedicated to investing in nonprofit organizations during transformative times, such as during strategic restructuring or executive transition. Founded in 2012 by a group of Los Angeles foundations, NSI's mission is to normalize and financially support the exploration of strategic restructuring agreements to aid organizations in sustaining their impact within the communities they serve.

Type of Support

Overview

The Nonprofit Sustainability Initiative offers grants aimed at supporting nonprofit organizations based in Los Angeles County through periods of significant change. This includes fostering strategic restructuring partnerships for greater organizational effectiveness and supporting executive transitions when a long-tenured leader departs. The initiative provides two main types of funding:

  1. Negotiation grants to facilitate discussions toward strategic partnerships, with grants typically ranging between $20,000 – $40,000.
  2. Integration grants to cover one-time costs related to the implementation of a negotiated agreement, which can range between $20,000 – $50,000.

Additionally, the NSI launched an Executive Transition Fund to assist organizations in navigating leadership changes. This includes planning and implementing comprehensive transition plans, with grants in previous years ranging from $75,000 to $95,000 per organization. The 2022-2023 cohort offers $100,000 in executive transition planning and implementation grants, alongside resources, consulting, and mentorship opportunities for selected organizations.
