As New York’s community foundation, we foster and engage in enduring and innovative philanthropy.
The Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund offers grants to tax-exempt organizations in New York City for providing fellowships to young artists aged 6 to 18. The aim of these grants is to prepare these artists for higher education in the arts or other career opportunities. The grants are intended for either the expansion of existing initiatives or the launching of new programs that assist in achieving a significant artistic credit. Priority is given to efforts that support artists from historically underrepresented groups. Grants, not exceeding $150,000 per organization, will cover a period of two or three years and support at least two fellows per request. The funding is meant to cover fellowship costs, including a limited allowance for administrative expenses, and encourages supplemental income from additional sources. Report submissions on program and recipient progress, as well as tracking artistic achievements post-fellowship, are required from recipients. Organizations have the flexibility to support the same artists throughout the grant term or different artists for shorter terms, with the condition that individual artists do not receive more than four years of Van Lier funding from a single nonprofit.
