Overview

The grant program's broad goals include turning New York City into a climate-smart metropolis, creating healthier and more livable communities, and protecting urban ecologies. Specific causes supported are reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, increasing renewable energy generation, encouraging climate resilience, preventing air pollution, reducing exposure to toxic substances, redeveloping brownfields, enhancing open spaces, and ensuring equitable environmental benefits. It also aims to protect critical watersheds, prevent waterway pollution, and preserve urban green spaces. Grants range from $5,000 to $200,000, with an average grant of around $90,000, and applicants are encouraged to have additional funding sources.

  • Primarily focused in New York, but organizations headquartered outside the City are also considered
  • Grantees or fiscal agents must have a board of directors with at least four members and no more than one paid board member
  • Funding is aimed at programs that promote change in policy or systems, build capacity of organizations, and expand and/or improve direct service
  • Overhead costs for grant administration must not exceed five percent of the total project budget for universities, hospitals, academic medical centers, and affiliated nonprofit fiscal sponsors
  • Administrative costs for carrying out grant activities are not subject to the five percent limit
  • Grants are generally for one year, with a case required for multi-year funding
